After Loss: Rebuilding Trust in Your Body

After Loss: Rebuilding Trust in Your Body

Welcome to the Fertility Series from South Shore Acupuncture and Wellness. Over twelve weeks, we are walking through the fertility and pregnancy situations we see most in the clinic, Wherever you are in the process, there is likely a chapter here for you. Begin at the start, or jump to what you need most. Check out the master post.

If you have lost a pregnancy, I am glad you are here, and I hate that you have a reason to be.

People say miscarriage is common like that is supposed to make it hurt less. It usually does not. Knowing how many people this happens to does not make it feel less personal when it is happening especially after you had already started imagining the future.

Loss changes the way the body and the nervous system approach pregnancy. Acupuncture after miscarriage addresses the physiology of that grief alongside the preparation for trying again.

Miscarriage gets talked about in numbers a lot. Ten to twenty percent of known pregnancies end in loss. Recurrent loss is less common, usually defined as two or more losses. There are statistics for all of it, and sometimes those statistics are useful, but they do not do much for the part of you that is awake at night trying to understand why this happened.

Sometimes there is an answer. Sometimes a loss is chromosomal. Sometimes it is connected to uterine structure, clotting, hormones, inflammation, immune factors, or the way the uterine lining is developing. And sometimes, even after testing, there is no clear answer, which can be its own kind of cruelty.

When there is no answer, it is easy to turn on yourself. It is easy to start feeling like your body is unreliable, unknowable, or somehow working against you. I do not want to dismiss that feeling, because it can be very real after loss, but I also do not want to leave you alone with the idea that your body is the enemy. Part of the work after miscarriage is slowly rebuilding a relationship with a body that may feel hard to trust.

You did not come here for false hope, and you did not come here for someone to tell you it will happen when it is meant to. You came here because something in you knows this deserves to be taken seriously. Your body deserves to be understood, not blamed. Your grief deserves to be witnessed, not rushed. Your next step deserves care that is specific to you.

I know how badly you want this, and how much it hurts to feel like you are losing time. I am not going to tell you to be patient. What I will ask is that we take a breath, figure out what your body actually needs, and build the next step together.
