Electroacupuncture, or electrostim, adds a gentle, low-level electrical current to acupuncture needles. It gives a steady, consistent treatment at the points that matter most for pain and nerve conditions, without needing to manipulate the needles by hand.
Electroacupuncture and traditional acupuncture each have distinct clinical applications. Electroacupuncture provides consistent, controlled stimulation that is particularly useful for persistent muscle tension, nerve pain, and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Neither approach is inherently more effective than the other. We determine which treatment is appropriate based on your clinical presentation and how your body responds.
We frequently use electroacupuncture for chronic neck and back pain, sciatica, peripheral neuropathy, muscle spasms, arthritis, sports injuries, car accident injuries, and certain neurological conditions, including Bell's palsy. Treatment is individualized according to your symptoms, affected tissues, and clinical needs.
Muscles often remain contracted or guarded long after an injury, contributing to persistent pain, restricted movement, and irritation of surrounding nerves. Electroacupuncture uses gentle electrical stimulation to influence neuromuscular activity and pain signaling, reducing excessive muscular tension and restore more comfortable movement. The goal is not to overwhelm the body with stimulation, but to encourage a more balanced and functional response.
Electroacupuncture is a gentle, comfortable treatment. At South Shore Acupuncture & Wellness, we use carefully controlled stimulation that most patients barely notice, if they feel anything at all. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, and many patients find the experience deeply relaxing.
Not every patient or condition requires electrical stimulation. We evaluate your health history, symptoms, and clinical findings to determine whether electroacupuncture is appropriate. Certain medical conditions and implanted electrical devices require additional precautions or make this treatment unsuitable.
Both treatments use electrical stimulation, but they have different applications within our clinical approach. Electroacupuncture uses acupuncture needles and is particularly useful for addressing muscular and neuromuscular dysfunction. ATP Resonance BioTherapy® uses gentle, needle-free microcurrent technology and offers a different range of clinical applications. We determine which treatment is appropriate based on your individual needs.
