What Acupuncture Looks Like Throughout Pregnancy: 2nd Trimester
Welcome to the Fertility Series from South Shore Acupuncture and Wellness. Over twelve weeks, we are walking through the fertility and pregnancy situations we see most in the clinic, Wherever you are in the process, there is likely a chapter here for you. Begin at the start, or jump to what you need most. Check out the master post.
The second trimester is often described as the easier part of pregnancy, and for some people, it is. Nausea may start to ease. Energy may come back. Pregnancy may begin to feel more visible and real. But easier does not mean the body has stopped asking for support. It usually means the support needs to shift.
In the second trimester, I am often looking at pain, pressure, and the way the body is reorganizing itself around a growing uterus. As your center of gravity changes, the pelvis, low back, hips, ribs, and abdominal wall all have to adapt. That adaptation is normal, but it can still create symptoms that interfere with sleep, movement, and basic comfort.
The second trimester is when pregnancy starts to feel real and the body is visibly changing. Acupuncture in the second trimester supports a body that is rapidly shifting.
Low back pain, hip pain, and sciatica are some of the most common things I treat during this part of pregnancy. As the pelvis changes and the baby grows, the sciatic nerve can become irritated. That may feel like pain through the hip or glute, tingling down the leg, numbness, or a sharp discomfort that makes sitting, walking, or sleeping harder than it used to be.
Round ligament pain is another common second trimester complaint. The round ligaments support the uterus, and as the uterus grows, those ligaments stretch. That can create a sharp pulling pain in the lower abdomen or groin, especially with sudden movement, rolling over in bed, coughing, sneezing, or standing up quickly. It is common, but common does not mean easy to ignore when it keeps catching you off guard.
I also see pubic symphysis pain regularly. As relaxin increases and the pelvis becomes more mobile, the joint at the front of the pelvis can feel unstable or painful. Some people feel it when they walk. Some feel it on stairs, getting in and out of the car, or turning over in bed. Later in the second trimester, rib tightness and shortness of breath can also begin as the baby takes up more space and the diaphragm has less room to move.
Acupuncture belongs in this part of pregnancy care because these pain patterns are not just random discomforts. They are part of how the body is compensating. In treatment, I am looking at muscle tension, nerve irritation, pelvic strain, circulation, and the way the nervous system is responding to all of it. The goal is not to fight what pregnancy is doing. It is to help the body carry the change with less strain.
Sleep is often part of this conversation too. When hip pain, pelvic discomfort, sciatica, or rib tightness are present, getting comfortable at night can become its own problem. Supporting pain during the day often changes how someone rests at night, and better rest can make the rest of pregnancy feel more manageable.
At South Shore Acupuncture and Wellness in Rockland, second trimester care is about helping your body adapt to this phase of pregnancy with more support. You do not have to wait until pain becomes severe before you address it. This is a good time to work with the body as it changes, so pregnancy feels less like something you are bracing through and more like something your body has help carrying.
