Acupuncture That Looks at the Whole Picture

Living with ongoing pain, unpredictable symptoms, or a condition that never seems to fully improve affects far more than your physical health. It changes how you sleep, work, move, and participate in your own life.

At South Shore Acupuncture & Wellness, we treat patients with a wide range of concerns, from musculoskeletal injuries and migraines to fertility, hormonal conditions, neurological symptoms, and complex chronic illnesses.

Our approach begins with understanding how your symptoms developed, how they interact, and what is preventing your body from functioning comfortably. Treatment is individualized, combining clinical assessment with acupuncture techniques selected for your specific presentation.

Does acupuncture really work?

Yes, and after more than a decade in clinical practice, we've seen firsthand how meaningful those results are. At South Shore Acupuncture & Wellness, we regularly work with patients who have spent years struggling with chronic pain, migraines, hormonal concerns, and complex conditions that have disrupted their daily lives.

Our approach draws on over 10 years of clinical experience, combining a thorough understanding of each patient's health history with individualized treatment strategies. We see patients regain mobility, sleep more comfortably, experience fewer symptom flares, and return to activities they thought they might have to give up.

Acupuncture has an established body of clinical research, but what matters most to us is how treatment changes your ability to function, feel comfortable, and participate in your own life.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture stimulates specific points on the body, influencing nervous system activity, pain signaling, and local circulation. Research has identified several physiological responses associated with acupuncture, including changes in pain modulation and the release of naturally occurring chemicals involved in pain regulation.

From a clinical perspective, we also evaluate how different systems interact and contribute to your symptoms. This allows us to develop treatment strategies that address the broader patterns affecting your health rather than focusing exclusively on where discomfort occurs.

Does acupuncture hurt?

In our clinical experience, approximately 85% of patients feel little to nothing during acupuncture, 10% experience some needle sensitivity, and 5% are highly needle sensitive. Everyone experiences sensation differently, and we recognize that comfort is not one size fits all.

With over 10 years of clinical experience, we've developed treatment strategies for patients across the entire spectrum of sensitivity, including those with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and heightened nervous system responses. We tailor every treatment to the individual, taking into account their comfort, medical history, and how their body responds.

Our philosophy is that effective treatment doesn't need to be uncomfortable. Some of the most profound clinical responses come from the gentlest approaches. Many of our patients find acupuncture so relaxing that they fall asleep during their sessions.

What happens at my first acupuncture visit?

Your first appointment begins with a comprehensive consultation. We review your health history, current symptoms, medications, previous treatments, and how your condition is affecting your daily life.

We also assess relevant patterns in sleep, digestion, hormonal health, and other areas of functioning to better understand your overall presentation.

From there, we discuss our clinical findings, treatment recommendations, and what you should expect moving forward. Your care plan is developed around your individual needs and goals.

How many acupuncture treatments will I need?

Treatment frequency depends on your condition, how long symptoms have been present, and how your body responds.

Recent injuries and acute concerns often require a different approach than longstanding pain or complex chronic conditions. We discuss an initial treatment plan during your consultation and regularly reassess your progress, adjusting care as your needs change.

What should I do before and after acupuncture?

We recommend eating something before your appointment and wearing comfortable clothing. After treatment, listen to your body and allow yourself time to rest if needed.

Some patients leave feeling energized, while others experience a deep sense of relaxation. We provide any additional recommendations relevant to your individual treatment.

Do you accept health insurance for acupuncture?

We are in-network with several major insurance plans, and we welcome patients with all types of coverage. Acupuncture benefits vary from plan to plan, even within the same insurance company, so the only way to know what yours covers is to check your specific policy. If we are out of network with your plan, many patients use their out-of-network benefits or HSA and FSA funds for treatment.

When you schedule your initial consultation, our intake forms include a section where you can securely submit your insurance information. Our team reviews your benefits before your appointment so we can provide the clearest information available about your coverage and anticipated costs.

During your consultation, we discuss your treatment recommendations, insurance considerations, and financial responsibility before proceeding with care. We believe patients should be able to make informed decisions about their health without unexpected financial surprises.
